A gummy smile is when a noticeable amount of the upper gum shows when you smile. Some people would like their smile to look more balanced, and the right approach depends on what is causing it.

Not every gummy smile has the same cause. It may be related to the activity of the muscles that lift the upper lip, the shape of the teeth and gums, or the structure of the jaw. That is why treatment starts with understanding the cause.

When the cause is related to muscles lifting the upper lip, small amounts of botulinum toxin may be used to soften their movement, helping reduce gum display and create a more balanced smile. If the cause is dental or skeletal, other options are likely to be more appropriate, and assessment by the relevant specialist is recommended.

Your appointment starts with an assessment of your smile and lip movement and a discussion of your expectations. If treatment is suitable, we explain the plan before starting. Using injections for this purpose is commonly considered an aesthetic use outside the product’s approved indications, and this is part of the conversation with your practitioner.

Results appear gradually and vary between individuals. The effect of the injections is temporary and requires follow-up based on your assessment. This is confirmed during your assessment.

When Treatment May Not Be Appropriate
